“What drives me is not a desire to help, to fix or change, but to understand something about my country.”

– Kim Mahood, Position Doubtful

Our Services

The Fulcrum Agency is committed to improving the quality of life for First Nations people and addressing the systemic injustices perpetrated through planning, building and delivery processes in Indigenous communities.

We work with First Nations communities across Australia, in urban centres, regional towns and remote communities. Our clients include local community groups, Land Councils, Native Title Corporations, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, and government agencies seeking culturally appropriate approaches.

We are a unique team of architects, project managers, grant writers, social impact experts and consultants. We support every stage of community-led projects, from fund procurement to community visioning, master planning and building design. We provide all services in line with the APO NT Partnership Principles.

We use our skills in problem solving, deep listening and respectful dialogue to develop solutions that empower the communities with whom we work.

Our role is to provide communities with the technical knowledge to make informed decisions and to create frameworks for reflection, consensus, and cultural exchange. We use tools and techniques developed through years of experience and take enormous pride in our work.

We consult with Aboriginal Land Councils and all levels of government on all aspects of the built environment.

We consult to Aboriginal Land Councils and all levels of government, bringing our understanding of the built environment, the challenges of remote construction and the opportunities of genuine community agency.

Our approach encompasses all aspects of the built environment, from climate and the environment to materials, demographics, character, and identity. We centre culture, listen deeply to our clients and embed First Nations care for Country in our work.

Our work provides clear, evidence-based advocacy for our clients. We craft well-written and illustrated reports that bridge the gap between city-based decision-makers and the realities of community life.

We keep communities at the forefront of the decision-making process

We provide Aboriginal Land Councils with the tools to petition for equitable access to mainstream amenities and services, and communities with the technical knowledge to make informed decisions about their housing and community infrastructure.

Our community-led planning services encompass master planning, town planning, and community visioning, all designed to support the ambitions of First Nations communities. We bring extensive experience in demographic research, mobility and growth studies, settlement planning, and housing and infrastructure audits.

We make the most impact when projects arrive on our doorstep before any major planning decisions have been made. We work at a measured pace to build trust and create spaces for reflection, consensus, knowledge sharing, and empowerment.

We draw on our skills in strategy, engagement and research to design and deliver buildings with impact.

Our architects and project managers deliver projects in remote, regional and suburban locations for First Nations clients across Australia.

We design buildings that strengthen community life, including culturally appropriate housing, health, education, cultural facilities, and homeless accommodation. We are comfortable designing everything from major refurbishments to buildings from the ground up.

We understand that new buildings demand huge investments in money, time, and natural resources. We take the stress out of construction and apply our understanding of First Nations communities to our project management processes.

Our team can assist with grant writing, the development of supporting information or any other part of the ‘money story.’

We enjoy writing applications for projects connected to the built environment and understand the requirements of Territory, State and Federal grant programs.

This work can be a laborious process for time-strapped organisations, requiring intensive liaison with government, key stakeholders and other funding bodies during the development of the grant application.

We prepare project descriptions, conceptual drawings, budgets, risk assessments and business plans to help you make your case for funding.
